It surely lacks a smooth sailing story which is the backbone of any good movie. However Ilayarajas music, presence of three national award winning artists, excellent locations are the highlights of Rasathanthram. Chiefly shot in Thodupuzha in Idukki; the streams, the hills and the rest of the location cinematographed by Azhagappan is a treat.
Directed by Sathyan Anthikkad who is well known for his ‘Mohanlal in the lead’ movies, Rasathanthram moves briskly in the first half with vibrant humour. However in the second half it makes some unexpected twists and turns which does not sink in very well at times.
Premachandran (Mohanlal) lives with his father (Gopi) who is a retired teacher. Premachandran is well known for his Vastu skills across the village. He works as a carpenter and has a team of carpenters including Manikandan Asari (Innocent).
His neighbourhood girl, daughter of (KPAC Lalitha), has a tacit crush for him. Premachandran Asari’s work site neighbour, Roy Joseph (Sreekumar) asks for some carpentry help from the team. Preman goes to Roy’s house and has an accidental encounter with Kanmani (Meera Jasmine) who was taking a bath.
Kanmani who hails from Tamil Nadu is a domestic help to the rich family and was abandoned there by her own mother when she was a small child. She is now grownup but is ill-treated by the rich family. Premachandran learns about the abject conditions Kanmani was enduring at Roy Joseph’s home. He slowly begins to feel pity for her and discusses the matter with father. Father however did not agree with his views that she needed to be helped.
Driven to suicide, Kanmani leaves home one night. Premachandran saves Kanmani from imminent death and she ended up disguising as a boy Velayudhan Kutty under circumstances and started living at Premachandran’s home.
Eventually Kanmani (who was being searched by the Police on the complaint of Roy Joseph) is caught by the police and in the court she says that she is in love with Premachandran to his shock. Premachandran has a past as he has taken upon himself a murder committed by someone else to save his sister’s honour! Now Premachandran has a new problem in Kanmani added to that of many of his own. How matters develop and what happens in Premans and Kanmanis life forms the rest of the story.
Songs like Ponnavanipaadam, and others sung brilliantly by our young singers have surely been one of the finest in recent times.
We would like to give it 6 marks out of 10.
