Dowry is a gift of money or valuables given by the bride's family to that of the groom at the time of their marriage.
The issue concerns the dowry disease that has afflicted community youngsters. Many of the young married men are ‘dowrydasans’ and many more are waiting to jump into the bandwagon.
Dowry needs to be distinguished from a girl's regular share of property. That is her entitlement. it has never been denied in Kerala particularly by nairs. But what is happening now, is lust for money. The parents who ask for it and the boys who ask for it should be socially condemned. There is nothing to compete, in this race amongst some section of values-derprived middle class. No one from a decent family will ask for dowry. But surely - the girl's share in the name of dowry can not be squandered. So what is needed is passing down of girl's share with trusteeship conditions.
