TRUE RESPECT AND GENUINE LOVE

President Hun Jintao of China met the family of Dr. Kotni and spends his precious 20 minutes with the family in a hotel room in Mumbai.  Kind remembering and true respect being given at all times whenever Chinese leaders paid their visit to India.

Way back in 1938, Dr. Dwakanath Kotnis went to China in response to a request from China to help in its fight against Japanese forces. His mobile clinic treated hundreds of patients in the battlefield. His experience and tribulations in the forefront inspired the young and old, and even his work is being taught in school textbooks.

A large memorial and a small museum at Chinese Martyrs Memorial Park in China and a stamp issued in his honour was a real tribute for an Indian Doctor.

Dr. Kotnik had married to a Chinese woman, Guo Qinglan, and she used to visit Kotni’s family in India.  Dr. Kotni died at the age of 32 after an epileptic seizure.

Protest declaration on ice-cream parlour case

A public convention will be organised at Kozhikode in Kerala on January 8 to bring out a protest declaration on the alleged attempts being made to surpass law in the ill-famous Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex racket case. 

Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the convention. Teesta Setalvad, lawyer and social activist, will deliver the keynote address at the convention. Noted playwright K. T. Mohammad, social critic Sukumar Azhikode, M. P. Veerendrakumar MP and writer M. T. Vasudevan Nair will speak at the convention.

The organisers of the convention told reporters at Kozhikode on Thursday that the protest declaration has been planned as concerted attempts were being made to weaken the case. They said that the attempt was evident from the way prosecution witnesses were being forced to retract their statements. “The witnesses had turned hostile in the way it had happened during the trial of the Best Bakery case related to the Gujarat carnage,” they said.

They said that attempts were being made to save the culprits involved in the sex racket.  “The civil society will have to ensure that a fair trial was conducted and the guilty brought to book in the case,” the organisers said.

Cyber cafes soon at railway stations

Railtel Corporation of India Limited will set up cyber cafes at railway stations in Kerala as part of the infrastructure development of railway stations.

The facility will be available at Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Palakkad railway stations initially. According to sources, the cafes will come up within three months. The operators have identified the places where the cafes will be set up on the platform of each railway station.

The new venture in Kerala follows the successful functioning of the first such facility set up in New Delhi railway station. The expenditure for each Internet kiosk to be set up at the stations will depend upon the number of work stations and the mode of services provided.

A cyber café is likely to incur around Rs 6 to 7 lakh and the amount will be met by the franchisee. The Railways will provide the area to set up the facility at the stations.

Kerala Library Association - essay competition!

Kozhikode regional committee of the Kerala Library Association is conducting an essay competition on ‘Future of libraries in electronic era’ for students of colleges affiliated to Kannur and Calicut universities in Kerala.

The entries should not exceed 10 pages. Students should send their entries along with certificates issued by respective principals to K. G. Karthikeyan/Dinesan Koovakkai, CHMK Library, Calicut University (PO), 673635, before November 5.

Entries for campus film festival - Kochi.

The School of Media Studies (SOMS) has invited entries for ‘SOMS Festival for Campus Films-2005’, which is to be held on the SOMS campus at Kakkanad near Kochi, Kerala, from November 11 to 13.

The festival is being organised in association with the Department of Public Relations and the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. Students from any recognised institution in the state can participate in the festival.

The competition categories include short fiction, documentary and spots, musical and animation. There is no limit to the duration of the film. The film can be in any language with English subtitles.

Vista 2005 - meet of the management centre!

‘Vista-05’, the annual South India meet of the management centre of Calicut University will be held on October 21 and 22 at the Jubilee Hall, Kozhikode. 

‘Unraveling the DNA of 360 degree Brand Management’, a seminar, will be the key programme of the meet. It will be chaired by the IIM (Kozhikode) professor Dr. Keyoor Purani. Eminent personalities from the corporate and the academic spectrum will participate in the seminar.

Around 500 students from various business schools from across the country are expected to participate in the event. Other attractions of ‘Vista – 05’ include best manager, project presentation, paper presentation on seminar topic, brand wards, communication games and business quiz.

The controversy - Supreme Court vs. Legislature.

In the recent controversy on Supreme Court ruling, letting loose the management of private professional colleges in India to their whims and fancies, there is no point in blaming the apex court. From what has appeared in the press, it is clear that lack of proper legislation at state and national levels are the cause of such a court ruling. Judiciary makes rulings based on the laws of the land.

They, especially the apex court benches comprising of many judges, cannot make rulings based on their personal convictions or likings. It is the lack of will on the part of state and central governments to make adequate legislations to rein in the private institutions that lead to the present situation. It is also very clear that the governments are not properly represented by its legal advisors in the courts due to various factors and influences.

Need of the hour is to have the states and central governments make adequate constitutionally viable legislations in consultation with the apex court to rein in this menace of commercialisation of professional education in India. And it is very essential to make sure that the governments are properly represented in these courts by efficient and sincere attorneys.

BPO scams

I'm starting this thread in the hope it wont grow too much. 

I seek to create a forum, or a message board at the very least, on scams or suspicious activities that make use of the the terms "BPO", "Outsourcing" and "call center", notably the recent spate of so-called  "data entry work".

Where is Calicut, Kerala in BPO?

In the BPO area Bangalore and mangalore are said to be shining and Mangalore poised take over the mantle at least to a small extent with its more pristine environment. When will we, (Kerala) have something to showcase?
