Experience Malabar at Malabar Mahotsav 20 Dec - 20 Jan 07.

Kozhikode City Corporation is organising various programs as part of the 140th anniversary celebrations from Dec. 20 to Jan 20.  A website has been already inaugurated by Mayor M. Bhaskaran. ‘Malabar Mahotsav’ aims to expose cultural tradition of Malabar to the new generation and also to encourage business and tourism in the state.

Various programmes being planned include demonstrations by Indian Navy, Air Force. Para Gliding, hot balloon plays, water sports, and helicopter trips etc have been planned. 

Residents and tourists can look forward to flower shows, aqua shows, handicraft exhibition, film festival, Circus, Magic, and street entertainment at different venues.  There will be also sports events such as football. Treasure hunts, package tours, flying trapeze, dram fest, mass run etc are also part of the plan.

Business seminars, cyber games, quiz competition on the culture of Malabar will be organized during the month long festival.

3D science show at Regional Science Centre and Planetarium.

Kozhikode: 3D science show has begun at Regional Science Centre and Planetarium, Kozhikode. It is the first of its kind organised in Malabar. A new planetarium show named Celestial Wonders, including fun science, planetarium, sky observation, temporary exhibitions etc. is a wonderful experience for Malabar people. Minister for Forest, Minister Binoy Viswam inaugurated the show. Many students are visiting planetarium to view the wonder of the universe with great curiosity.

Kappad still silent, but ...

Kohikode: Monsoon fury doesn't affect this historic coast of Malabar. Kappad is still a wonder sight in Monsoon compared to other coasts of Malabar. The waves are silent, the sea is calm as a morning river. Many tourists come here to enjoy the serene atmosphere in summer. Fishermen test their luck to get a good catch. Now the coast is facing severe soil erosion and coconut trees in the coast are falling. A strong sea belt is a must to save this coast, according to local people and nature lovers. Pollution in various kinds is also disturbing this wonderful coast.

Calicut NIT gets national recognition.

National Institute of Technology, Calicut has been selected as the best first 20 technical schools in the country. NIT has become 14th among 100 schools. A survey was conducted by Dataquest IT magazine and IDC (International Data Corporation) to rank the best schools.

Employment availability, Infrastructure, Academic and research oppurtunities, Educational and Industrial common factor, Responses from the institute etc were the ranking factors.
Kozhikode NIT received 58.6 score while Delhi NIT earned 83 scores. Chennai NIT has earned the highest score at 84.9.

Music Therapy Workshop at Calicut.

Indian Music Therapy Research and Development Foundation (IMTRDF) is conducting summer workshop on Indian music therapy in association with Swathi Thirunal Kala Kendram, Thiruvannur, Kozhikode on 27th and 28th May.

According to the organizers, the main objective of the workshop is to create awareness among the public on the curative potential of Indian music therapy and its access to healing several areas of diseases and illnesses. The workshop will be conducted at Swathi Thirunal Kala kendram, Thiruvannur. It is aimed at students, corporate executives, medical professionals, traffic and police personnel, housewives and senior citizens.

The non-resident workshop will be in four sessions. It includes introductory lectures, seminar sessions, live presentations, audio-visual presentations, listening sessions and analytical application sessions.

Objective of the workshop according to Mr. Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri; “Music Therapy is widely known and accepted as a source of treatment for several diseases and illnesses. It is an accepted form of alternative and holistic system of medicine for treatment. Presently music therapy is widely used in western countries.

A.I.I.M.S status sought for Calicut Medical College.

Many organizations and public forums in the city have demanded for according AIIMS status for Calicut Medical College .The Kozhikode corporation council sent a unanimous memorandum to the chief minister and the authorities concerned  demanding this.

The Calicut chamber of commerce and industry has pointed out that Calicut, being the capital of Malabar has been facing a sort of negligence in all developmental projects. Many political parties, medical college students union, youth organizations, doctor’s forum also have the same opinion on the issue. Thiruvananthapuram has the convenience of advanced medical college hospital and super speciality public sector hospitals like Sree Chithra.

Six districts in the Malabar region will get the benefits of AIIMS if Calicut gets the status. Thousands of poor patients from Malabar region now depend upon this hospital for their health care.

If the status is accorded, the research facilities as well as development of all the existing departments will be possible. While ranking the physical convenience, Calicut Medical College is second to none. Acres of land is in possession of the hospital. Currently the hospital is overcrowded and there are many other problems due to the large number of patience coming from six districts around Calicut.

Photo Fest India 2006 at Calicut.

“Photo Fest India 2006”, three day all India photo and video trade fair will begin at
Kallai, Calicut on April 04. Around 60 stalls are going to participate in this mega event organized by all kerala photographers association. Fully air conditioned venue is all set at Sumangali auditorium.

Major international firms like Sony, Kodak, Fuji, Nikon, Konica, Olympus, Canon India, Better photography, will participate in the event. Fair is meant for professional, amateur photographers and those who are interested in photography and videography, including freelance photographers.

Photographers will find an opportunity to familiarize with the state of the art technolo-gies. They can get familiar with advanced and sophisticated equipment. Photography contests and fashion show through-out the days etc also have been planned according to the general convener P. K. Gireesh and general secretary Jose Mundakkal who called press conference.

The organizers will provide vehicle for the participants. It will be available at railway station, bus stand, link road, Meenchanda bypass, Palayam etc. Workshops, display of photographs, trade fair of cameras and photography equipment etc will be also taking place during the fest. Minister for P.W.D, Dr. M.K Muneer will inaugurate the fair on April 4.

E. Ahammad to open loan fair in Kozhikode

The Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahammad will inaugurate the loan fair organised in Kozhikode for women by the Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation at its office here. The loan fair will begin on January 7.

Quamarunnisa Anwar, chairperson of the Corporation, said that the Corporation has been disbursing loan to around 1,000 women across the State every year and the loan fair will create awareness among women regarding the functioning of the Corporation.   

“The main scheme of the corporation through the fair is to disburse loan to the women for self-employment. They can select any enterprise falling under cultivation, business or industries as per their abilities and imagination. The loan amount would vary from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh,” she said.

“Moreover, widows are being offered loans at 4 per cent and other women at 6 per cent,” Anwar said.

Nuclear medicine expert’s meet at Kozhikode.

The 37th annual conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine India (SNMI) will be organised at Kadavu Resorts at Kozhikode in Kerala from December 8 to 11. A conference of its kind is being held in Kerala for the first time.

Experts in nuclear medicine from the country and abroad will assemble for the conference for deliberating on the new trends in the emerging system of nuclear medicine, which is increasingly used to cure various diseases, including cancer.

MIMS director Dr. Azad Moopen and SNMI secretary general Dr. R. Rijju said at a press conference in Kozhikode that fusion imaging would be the key subject of the conference. Nearly 50 research papers on different aspects of the system will be presented at the conference.

The conference will be attended by experts from the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Babha Atomic Research Centre, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, All India Medical Sciences, Board of Radiological Isotope Technology, Pennsylvania University and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong.

Science, IT fair at Kozhikode from December 5

The Kerala Education Department will organise the 36th State Science Exhibition and IT fair at Kozhikode from December 5 to 8.

Around 6,000 students from 37 educational districts will participate in the fair. The fair will be organised at the Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Meenchantha, near Kozhikode.

Education Minister E. T. Mohammad Basheer will inaugurate the fair on December 5 at 4 p.m. Kerala Assembly Opposition Leader V. S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the valedictory function on December 8 at 2.30 p.m.
