National film festival in Kozhikode

The third national film festival of the Kerala State Film Academy will be organised in Kozhikode city from November 15 to 17.

Fifteen regional language films will be exhibited at the festival. ‘Kaantikal’, a Bengali movie directed by Shekar Das, will be the inaugural film of the festival. ‘Olavum Theeravum’, ‘Oridathoru Fayalwan’ and ‘Swayamvaram’ will be exhibited under the classic film category from Kerala.

As many as five films of Gireesh Kasaravally will be exhibited under the retrospective section.  An open forum and reception to film artists are also planned as part of the fest.

A meeting held in the city the other day set up various sub-committees comprising film artists for the conduct of the festival.

Free yoga class from November 24!

The Satyananda Yoga Research Centre, one of the important yoga training centres in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, will conduct free yoga class from November 24. The centre is located in Kozhikode city. The yoga sessions will continue for a month. Interested persons may register their names over phone, 91 – 495 – 2727505.

IRDP Fair from Friday!

The five-day IRDP-SGS trade fair will begin at Kozhikode in Kerala at the Government Training College and Higher Secondary School from September 9.

District Collector Rachna Shah will inaugurate the fair at a function to be held at the Training College on Friday. Twelve block panchayats from Kozhikode district and three block panchayats from Wayanad district will participate in the trade fair.

The Perambra-based ‘Subhiksha’ and Kozhikode Harijan Women Welfare Society will set up special stalls at the fair.

In Calicut, take your speed; the trap is ready.

Beware speedsters. You are no more safe if you take more than 35 km/hour in Kozhikode
city. The speed radars of the traffic police are all set to be your nightmare in the coming days.

You may not notice any traffic police near you when you accelerate your vehicle mindlessly on the soft roads of the city. But a Rs 7-lakh-radar can snap your vehicle at a distance of I kilometre and detect its speed accurately.

It can also take a photograph of the registration number of your vehicle from a distance of 200 metres. And as you approach the radar, police personnel will be ready, asking for the fine for over speeding.

And what will it cost you? If your vehicle is a lorry or bus or such big ones, you have to pay Rs 400 for violating the speed limit. And if you are driving a light motor vehicle, including the modern cars, the cost will be Rs 300.

The radar system has spotted as many as 45 speed limit violations in the last four days, mostly on the National Highway and NH bypass. The police are giving training to all personnel on the operation of the radar.

The radar was at work on the bypass near MIMS Hospital on Sunday and picked up around 10 offenders. On Saturday, the speed watch was on the National Highway at Thondayad where more than 10 people fell on the net.

And you will not obviously know where they are waiting for you on a particular day.
However, the police have only one radar system at present. Radars were distributed to the traffic units in all districts as part of the modernisation of the traffic control system. The units will be equipped with more such systems in the coming days, adding to the woes of speedsters.

And those young ones who want to fly on their motorbikes through the road even without a driving license may take extra care. They will have to leave their fashion cycles with the police for further embarrassments.
